ScoreStory or Culture Amp: which suits your organisation?

Culture Amp is a large employee experience platform, with engagement surveys, performance management, benchmarks and AI. ScoreStory does one thing: an eNPS question followed by an anonymous conversation about the reasons. Here is how they differ.

What each one is for

Culture Amp

Culture Amp, based in Melbourne, describes itself as an employee experience platform and, according to its own site, works with more than 6,000 companies. Engage covers engagement, pulse, onboarding and exit surveys, with templates designed by organisational psychologists and data scientists, and benchmarks to set your results against. Perform adds performance management. On top of that sits a range of AI features, from comment summaries to a coach for managers.

ScoreStory

ScoreStory asks employees for one score, the eNPS, and then holds a short conversation about the reasons. Vox, the AI interviewer, asks for reasons and examples, and the answers are sorted into themes and sentiment automatically, with the quotes behind them. You set it up yourself and pay per participant.

Where your data is

Culture Amp has data centres in the United States, the EU and Australia. According to its help centre, the region is chosen when you sign the contract, and it is the US if nothing is specified. The platform runs on AWS. Its sub-processor list also names parties in the US, including Anthropic for AI processing. Ask Culture Amp what that means for an account in the EU region. Culture Amp holds certifications including ISO 27001, SOC 2 and ISO 42001.

ScoreStory runs on its own infrastructure at Leaseweb in the Netherlands: the database, the queue and the file storage. The language model that holds and analyses the conversation is also Anthropic's, in the US, so the conversation text leaves the EEA for that step, under the EU Standard Contractual Clauses. Spoken answers are converted to text by Scaleway in France and are not kept afterwards. ScoreStory does not hold an ISO 27001 or SOC 2 certification. It is all on our privacy page.

What it costs

Culture Amp does not publish prices. The price depends on headcount, the products and the service level, and is billed annually. Advice from its People Science team is an add-on.

ScoreStory charges per participant, not per employee or per user, and the prices are on the website. Subscriptions start at €50 a month excl. VAT for 10 participants a month, and on an annual contract you pay for 10 months and get 12. Your first 10 interviews are free, with no credit card. See pricing.

When to choose which

Culture Amp is the better choice if you

  • want engagement, onboarding, exit and performance in one platform;
  • want to compare your results with a large benchmark;
  • need 360-degree feedback or performance reviews;
  • want employees to come in automatically from your HR system, or results in Slack or Teams;
  • run surveys in many languages, or require ISO 27001 from your suppliers.

ScoreStory is the better fit if you

  • mainly want to know why your eNPS is what it is, in your employees' own words;
  • want a conversation with every participant, in Dutch, German, French or Polish as well as English;
  • want your research data stored in the Netherlands without having to arrange it in a contract;
  • want to get going yourself, with published prices per participant and a free start;
  • don't need a full platform, just one good survey.

Switching, or using both

ScoreStory doesn't replace everything Culture Amp does. If you use Culture Amp for performance reviews or a large annual survey with benchmarks, you can run ScoreStory alongside it for an eNPS conversation in between, or for a team whose numbers raise questions.

How to start

  • Create a survey with eNPS as the metric, from a template or with Vox.
  • Make the survey anonymous before you invite anyone. After the first participant, that choice is locked.
  • Import your employees as a CSV or Excel file, with attributes such as department and location, or create invitations through the API.
  • If you want your eNPS to stay comparable, use the same question and the same 0 to 10 scale. You can edit the wording of the score question yourself.

Earlier Culture Amp results don't transfer to ScoreStory. Culture Amp offers exports as PDF, Excel and CSV; keep those for your historical comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Does Culture Amp also have AI that asks follow-up questions?

Yes. Culture Amp has AI follow-ups: after a rating or an open answer, an AI can ask one or two follow-up questions about the reasons. You switch it on per question, for a limited number of questions per survey, and Culture Amp says it works best in English. In ScoreStory the conversation is the survey itself: after the score, everyone gets an interview, in one of eight languages.

Do ScoreStory and Culture Amp use the same AI model?

In part. Both name Anthropic as a language model provider. Culture Amp says it also uses Google Gemini for specific cases. In ScoreStory, Anthropic's model holds the conversation and runs the analysis; speech is converted to text by Scaleway in France.

Does ScoreStory work for an organisation with thousands of employees?

Technically, yes: above 250 participants a month there is an Enterprise contract. But if at that size you need a full programme, with benchmarks, performance reviews, HR system integrations and a dedicated adviser, Culture Amp offers more.
